Picture this: You wake up, make your coffee, and reach for the creamer.

You open your refrigerator, and the light’s not on. Just then, you realize your refrigerator isn’t working. What should you do when you discover a broken appliance?

Here are the top five steps to take when one of your appliances breaks.

1. Check the Power

When you diagnose appliances for issues, start with the power. Every appliance requires a power source. If the power source is disconnected, the appliance won’t work.

This, of course, is the easiest DIY repair step. After all, if there is a power failure, you can fix it with one of these options:

  • Plug the appliance back in
  • Reset the GFCI outlet
  • Reset the breaker

If you perform this and the appliance works, you won’t need to take any other steps.

2. Check for a Warranty

If the power isn’t the problem, then you’ll need to proceed with additional steps. Locate the warranty information. Does your appliance have a manufacturer warranty?

You might have one if the appliance is relatively new. You might also have a home warranty that covers it.

Finding the warranty information is helpful before calling for appliance repair. Because if there’s a warranty, you may need to call the warranty headquarters to find a service technician.

3. Empty and Clean It

Next, clean it out. Some broken appliances might be empty. However, others have things in them.

For example, if you have a broken dryer, remove the clothes and clean the lint trap. If you have a broken dishwasher, remove the dishes. If your refrigerator breaks, take all the food out of it.

After removing the items, wipe down the device. This step is especially important for refrigerators. If you leave food particles in it, mold might grow.

4. Call for Repairs

The next step is to call for repairs. A broken appliance will require expert help.

If you don’t have a company to call, look for one in your area. You can search for “appliance repair services” to find one. Limit the search to your local city.

Some appliance companies also provide HVAC services and electrical repairs in addition to appliance services.

5. Decide to Replace or Repair

Finally, decide if you want to replace or repair the appliance. If you’re unsure which to choose, consider a few things.

First, consider the appliance’s age. A refrigerator, on average, lasts for 12 years. If you have a broken refrigerator, compare its age to the average.

If you’re near the end of the average useful life, it might be time to replace it.

Next, consider the repair costs. For example, how much does a new refrigerator cost compared to the repair costs? Replacing yours might be more cost-effective than repairing it.

Another helpful step is to ask an appliance repair company what they recommend. They can give you an expert suggestion whether to repair or replace your appliance.
