Did you know that you should be having regular AC maintenance done on your AC unit yearly? If you don’t get the maintenance, you’ll be decreasing the life span of the AC unit.

Not only that, but you are also going to experience more problems with the AC unit. One of those problems may be an AC unit leaking.

But what causes a leaking HVAC unit? Let’s take a deeper look!

Clogged Drain Line

If you begin to notice that your AC is leaking inside the home, it is most likely because you have a clogged drain line. The drain line may be clogged due to debris that gets in there and builds over time. That debris could be dust, dirt, or even mold.

When this happens, the water in the drain cannot properly run through the pipe to the outside of the home. Instead, the drain line is clogged, pushing the water back into your house.

If you believe that this is the problem, you can try to remove the dirt and debris in the drain line by using a vac. If done right, this should free up the blockage and allow the water to flow back through.

If that doesn’t work, it may be another issue. Your best solution would be to call a professional to figure out the issue for you.

Dirty Air Filter

You should be changing the air filter on your HVAC system every 30 to 90 days, depending on your home environment, allergens in the air, if you have a pet, and a few other factors.

If you don’t change it this often, you’ll have a dirty air filter which can result in a damaged system if it works too hard. Not only that, but the dirty air filter can cause damage to the coils by not allowing air to properly flow through it.

If the coil is damaged, it won’t let water flow through properly, either, hence the HVAC leaking water.

Low Level of Refrigerant

If you have a low level of refrigerant, you will also have lower pressure in the AC unit. If this happens, the evaporator coil can freeze, which will cause leaking water.

To figure out if this is happening, you should check your refrigerant levels. If you feel warm in your home or hear weird noises coming from the AC unit, this may be the culprit.

Have your system inspected regularly to prevent these problems from occurring. Ideally, you should have a thorough inspection at the start of every summer to prevent leaks and other issues.
