Our History
Sewell Electric & HVAC was formed in 1945 by Robert E. Sewell (1915–1999) and his wife, Ruth Sewell of Franklin, Tennessee. During WW II, Sewell worked on the Oak Ridge National Laboratory doing the electrical wiring for many of the buildings. He said that, at the time, the project was so secret that none of the contractors really knew any details of what thery were building other than the fact that it was something big that would required an enormous amount of electrical power.
A Legacy of Community
After the war, Sewells settled in Franklin on Jennings Street. They founded Sewell Electric Company in 1945 on Columbia Avenue in Franklin and they ran the business as a joint endeavor, Ruth working at the store beside her husband to make it a success. As the business grew they moved it to Fourth Avenue South.
In 1961, they formed WFLT, the first FM radio station in Williamson County. They also founded WIZO-AM and merged the two stations in 1968. On October 14, 1968, fire destroyed Sewell Electric. The store was rebuilt at 210 East Main St. in Franklin. In 1982, it was sold to long-time employees who continued to grow the company.
