It’s 105 degrees out, and the hot humid air is insufferable. You come home from work with sweat trickling down your face after your long commute.

You run to turn on your A/C and look forward to the cool air blasting in your face…but it doesn’t turn on. In fact, after messing with the controls for a few minutes, it isn’t working at all!

Have you ever found yourself in this situation? Your A/C breaks just when you needed it the most.

Unfortunately, air conditioner problems happen to everyone at one time or another. Luckily, most A/C issues can usually be fixed with a few simple steps or a visit from your local HVAC company.

Check out the guide below on summer solutions to common AC problems.

Common Air Conditioner Problems And Solutions

1. Refrigerant Leak

One common reason for an A/C not working is a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant is the substance used to cool your house. It can be in either a gas or liquid state.

It works with the compressor and other components of the AC unit to pump out refrigeration to the house. If the refrigerant is leaking, your A/C unit will typically blow hot air instead of cool.

The best solution to a refrigerant leak is repairing the leak. It’s smart to have an HVAC tech do this work. These techs are specialized in locating the leak and then charging the system with refrigerant. Refrigerants are toxic and dangerous and should be handled with care by an expert.

2. Drainage Issues

As the A/C unit cools your house, it produces condensation. Typically, this condensation drips into a pan and is carried to a sewage line via a drainage pipe.

Sometimes dirt and dust can clog this pipe. When this happens, the drain pan can overflow with water and damage the A/C unit.

In order to fix this, you will need to clean out the drainage pipe. Unless you have expertise in this, this is another task that is best left to the experts. They will clean it out as well as fix any damage that was done to the A/C unit.

3. Issues with Coils

Your A/C unit’s coils are an essential part of your HVAC system. These coils, with help from the refrigerant, transfer heat from inside your house to the outside.

Over time, these coils can become dirty or even get damaged. If this happens, your A/C unit won’t be able to run efficiently.

In order to resolve any issues with dirty coils, you can attempt to clean the coils yourself. However, if you must be careful that you don’t damage any of the coils. If the coils are damaged, you’ll need to have the coils replaced by an HVAC technician.

4. Thermostat Problems

A thermostat is an important part of your A/C unit. It regulates the temperature in your house and adjusts it as needed. When a thermostat stops working, this can prevent your A/C unit from properly functioning.

There could be many reasons why a thermostat isn’t working, including issues with the batteries, the power, and its cleanliness. In order to solve this, replace your batteries, clean your thermostat, and check the wiring. If it’s still not working, you should contact an HVAC technician for further troubleshooting.
