Worrying about how much that HVAC installation will cost? It’ll be a sizable investment but one that will give a valuable return.

Whether you’re replacing an old system or you need everything new, it’s good to be prepared before calling in the professionals. We’ve put together a quick guide comparing the HVAC installation costs by type and other factors that will go into what you end up paying.

HVAC Installation Cost Factors

There are many variables that are factored into the cost of the installation of an HVAC unit in your home. These include:

  • The size and condition of your home
  • If ductwork is included or not
  • The length of ductwork needed
  • The complexity of the installation
  • The brand and grade of the HVAC system
  • The type of system being installed

Size

More residential square footage means the HVAC system will need to be larger in order to heat and cool that space. You’ll want to make sure the size of the HVAC system fits the size of your home.

Too big and it’ll you’ll just be wasting money on high energy bills. If it’s too small, it won’t heat or cool your home efficiently.

Ductwork

Ductwork is the delivery system for your hot and cool air and the average home needs between 30 and 90 linear feet of ducting. You could be paying $1,000-$5,000 for duct installation in your home.

The type of material being used changes the price:

  • Flexible non-metallic ($1-$2 per linear foot)
  • Flexible aluminum ($1-$4 per linear foot)
  • Sheet metal ($1.50-$6 per linear foot)
  • Fiberglass duct board ($4.50-$6 per linear foot)

Complexity

The harder it is to complete the job, the pricier the installation fee. For example, if a majority of work is being done in a cramped attic, labor cost will increase.

HVAC System

The most popular types of HVAC systems are:

  • Heating and Cooling Split Systems
  • Ductless AC Systems
  • Packaged Heating and Air Conditioner Combinations

The type of system, grade and brand name all vary in price. There are several systems to choose from and each have different brands of contrasting quality and levels of efficiency.

The U.S. Department of Energy created a standard of energy efficiency for these systems. Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating or SEER for AC units and Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency or AFUE for furnaces. A higher rating means better efficiency but that does raise the upfront price for the unit.

HVAC Units and Price

Here is a list of HVAC systems and installation costs:

  • Central AC: $3,500-$7,600
  • Ductless HVAC System: $3,000-$5,000
  • Electric Furnace: $1,500-$2,500
  • Gas Furnace: $4,000-$5,000
  • Oil Furnace: $5,500-$6,500
  • Air Source Heat Pump: $5,000-$6,500
  • Geothermal Heat Pump: $20,000-$27,000

A full system installation can be between $4,800 and $9,350. If ductwork is also being installed, that would be an additional $2,000-$3,000. If you want features added on such as a zoning system, variable fan speed, humidifier or UV light installation, that can add $13,000-$17,000 to the job.
