Every year in the United States, three million HVAC systems need replacing. If your heating and cooling system are showing signs of acting up, it may be time to replace it.

How can you tell if your HVAC system needs repairs or if it’s time to install a new one? Read on to discover the top warning signs you should replace HVAC systems.

1. Some Rooms Are Warmer or Colder

Older HVAC systems have trouble moving air evenly throughout the house. As a result, you may notice that some rooms are warmer or colder than others in your home.

It could be a duct problem, or it could be that the system is simply getting too old and isn’t working well anymore.

2. Your System Makes Strange Noises

If you hear strange noises, this is one of the most common signs you may need to replace an HVAC system.

Before you do, contact a heating and cooling company to come and take a look at your system. A loose or faulty part can sometimes be the reason you hear strange noises. A quick HVAC repair call can determine the source of the noises and whether anything can be done.

What noises can indicate a failing system? Groaning, loud humming, rattling, popping, and banging are all signs you may need to replace it.

3. High Energy Bills

There are many causes of higher electric bills, such as using an electric furnace versus gas, but if your bills are suddenly higher than usual, it may be due to an old HVAC system.

Compare your energy bills and look for patterns. If you see a steadily climbing cost culminating in a spike, check your HVAC system. If it’s reaching the end of its lifespan, it may simply be time to replace it.

4. It’s Over Ten Years Old

Building onto the last point, old systems require more energy to run. You should usually replace your HVAC system every 10-15 years. You can extend the life of your unit with regular maintenance.

However, if you haven’t been keeping up with regular maintenance, this can cause your system to die out faster. You can usually find out the age of your unit by looking for the manufacture date.

5. It Uses Freon

Old AC systems used freon, another name for hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) or R-22 refrigerant.

Unfortunately, this is an ozone-depleting substance. As of January 1, 2020, no new HCFC-22 will be imported or created in the US.

New systems are more environmentally friendly. If your system still uses freon and you notice any of these signs, you’ll need to retrofit or replace your old unit.
