Is your home in desperate need of an air conditioner? Well, with so many types of air conditioners out there, it can be hard to know which one would work best. Not every air conditioning system serves the same purpose or uses the same process, so you don’t want to end up with the wrong option.

Types of Air Conditioners You Should Know

Need to narrow down your air conditioner options, but not sure where to start. Here are the common air conditioning cooling systems you should know as you shop.

Central Air Conditioner

One of the most common types of cooling systems is central air conditioners. Central air units circulate cool air through your home through a system of supply and return ducts.  These supply and return ducts are located within your walls and floors.

If and when the air becomes warm again, it circulates back into the supply and return ducts and is brought back to the air conditioner. This option can be great for people who own bigger homes because it cools larger spaces more effectively.

Installing a system this size does take a lot of planning and preparation though because if you install the wrong one you’ll end up paying a lot more than you’d like in utility expenses.

If you decide to get a central air unit, talk to an HVAC installation company ahead of time. They can make sure you choose the right option, and that it’s installed effectively.

Mini-Split Air Conditioner

Another large air conditioner option you should know is the ductless, mini-split air conditioner. These options are often used for spaces in a home that have been retrofitted. They also functionally similar to central air units, but they’re designed more for adjusting heat within individual rooms.

These systems have their own thermostat, which means you can adjust the temperature for an individual room. This makes it an effective choice for people who may want to cool certain rooms in their home more than others.

Portable Air Conditioner

Do you only really need to cool one room at a time? Or do you want an option you can take on the go if you travel? If so, you may want to purchase a portable air conditioner.

These simple systems take in air from the room, cool it, and then direct it back outside. It does this through an exhaust house, which you install in your window. This option is cheap and easy to install but can only help you cool one room at a time.

Window Air Conditioner

Another effective way to cool a single room is with a window air conditioner. As you’d expect, you simply install this unit in the window of your room. It then sucks up the warm air in the room and blasts out cool air instead.

These options do a great job of cooling smaller spaces. But they won’t help too much if you install them in larger rooms. And while they’re great, buying a bunch of window units for all your rooms isn’t the most effective environmental option and can rack up a high electric bill.
